Yoko Ono Fan Club
Call for Works and Proposals
Reception Feb 27 2014 5 PM – 7 PM
Feb 27 – Mar 29 2014
UB Art Gallery
At the Visual Studies Gallery at UB Art Gallery, Center for the Arts, University at Buffalo
Yoko Ono Fan Club is conceived in the spirit of Fluxus, in the belief that absurdity, play, arbitrariness, and randomness (among other qualities) are forms of resistance to and negation of one-dimensionalitymarked by an elevation of Reason above allas described by Herbert Marcuse in One-Dimensional Man. While the text was published in the 1960s and the forces in play have evolved, we still believe the paths mentioned above to be viable and useful in the present day.
In this spirit we invite works ranging from instructional texts, performance scores, proposals for happenings, performances, and the like, to more traditionally mediated though no-less-subversive works, installations, so-called ‘new media’, interactive works of all sorts, as well as documentation, propositions, manifestos, papers, and any other sorts of cultural production that are in the spirit of this call for work and proposals. Brief (250 word maximum) statements of intent may accompany your works, to enlighten the feeble and one-dimensionally-suffering minds of the jury. The jury seeks, for this show, to use the gallery space to question its own premises, exhibit difficult-to-exhibit works, and generally bring attention to an otherwise dispersed sort of art. There is a strong desire to stage performances, happenings, and other active sorts of pieces as a regular lunchtime series during the run of the exhibition; works and proposals directed toward this circumstance are encouraged.
